Hiring: Cook 2 Position

Position Summary

The University of Oregon’s Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) invites applications a part-time (1.0 FTE) seasonal Cook 2 position. This position generally works full-time during spring, summer and fall terms. There may be occasional work during winter term.

The Cook 2 leads and directs the kitchen in the preparation of daily meals served to the students, staff, visiting groups, and special events at OIMB. Duties include oversight of all kitchen operations; directing meal preparation, production, service, and clean up; creating prep list for the day; completing worksheets at the close of shift by recording food usage; assigning work to kitchen staff; assisting the manager with controlling labor costs through effective analysis of staffing needs and schedules; assisting with product ordering and receiving; acting as the lead of the kitchen in Manager’s absence.

Work is seasonal. Spring and summer terms usually require the preparation of three meals per day, seven days per week. Fall and winter terms usually have irregular visiting groups.

Special Requirements:
Must have or be able to obtain a current Oregon Food Handler card within two weeks of employment.
This position typically drives a university vehicle for grocery shopping, which requires valid driver’s license and ability to obtain UO Driver’s Certification.

Minimum Requirements

• Two years of cooking experience in an institution or commercial firm serving complete meals; OR
• An Associate’s degree in Food Service Management, Foods and Hospitality Service, or a directly-related field.

• Ability to provide excellent customer service.
• Effective time management skills and ability to prioritize duties during rush periods.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience directing staff.
• Experience preparing food in a high-volume kitchen.
